Brick vs AAC Block vs Concrete Block: Which Is Best for Your Walls?

Wall material is a genuine specification decision with real trade-offs, not just a cost line to minimize — each option affects construction speed, thermal comfort, and long-term durability differently.

Traditional clay bricks

Clay bricks (table-moulded or wire-cut) are the traditional standard, offering good compressive strength and a construction method most masons are deeply familiar with. They're generally heavier and smaller than block alternatives, meaning more units and more mortar are needed per wall area, which affects both material cost and labour time.

AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks

AAC blocks are lightweight, larger-format blocks with good thermal insulation properties — genuinely useful in Tamil Nadu's hot climate, since they reduce heat transfer into the building compared to solid brick or concrete block. Their larger size means faster wall construction with fewer joints, though they typically cost more per unit than clay bricks and need compatible mortar/adhesive systems to perform as intended.

Solid concrete blocks

Solid concrete blocks offer strong compressive strength and are widely available, often at a competitive cost. They're heavier than AAC blocks and generally provide less thermal insulation than AAC, meaning a concrete-block home may need more active cooling to stay comfortable compared to an AAC alternative, all else equal.
