Natural Ventilation and Passive Cooling Design for Tamil Nadu's Climate

Tamil Nadu's climate โ€” hot for much of the year, with high humidity in coastal areas โ€” makes cooling a genuine, ongoing cost for most homes. Good passive design can meaningfully reduce reliance on air conditioning, and much of it costs little or nothing extra if planned into the design from the start.

Cross-ventilation through window placement

Windows positioned on opposite or adjacent walls of a room, rather than clustered on a single wall, allow air to actually move through the space rather than just entering and stagnating. This single design decision, made early, costs nothing extra but genuinely affects how a room feels in daily use.

Orientation and sun exposure

East-facing openings catch gentler morning sun; west-facing walls and windows bear the brunt of intense afternoon heat. Minimizing large west-facing glazing, or protecting it with overhangs, shading devices, or vegetation, meaningfully reduces heat gain during the hottest part of the day.

Roof and terrace heat management

Landscaping as passive cooling

Trees positioned to shade west and south-facing walls, and vegetation around the plot generally, measurably reduce the ambient temperature immediately around a house compared to a bare, paved plot โ€” a genuinely underused passive cooling strategy that also improves the overall living environment.
