TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) steel bars are the reinforcement inside your RCC structure, and the grade specified affects both strength and ductility โ€” how the structure behaves under stress, including during an earthquake or other extreme load event.

What the Fe number means

The number after "Fe" (like Fe 500) refers to the minimum yield strength of the steel in megapascals โ€” essentially how much stress the bar can handle before it starts to permanently deform. A higher number generally means higher strength, which can allow for somewhat less steel by weight to achieve the same structural capacity.

Fe 500 vs Fe 500D โ€” the D matters

The "D" in Fe 500D stands for ductile, indicating the bar meets additional ductility and elongation requirements beyond standard Fe 500. This extra ductility matters most in seismic-prone areas or structures needing better performance under sudden or extreme loads, since a more ductile bar deforms and gives warning before failing, rather than failing suddenly.
